Mass Save is easy to understand…if you deal with it every day!
What is the Mass Save Program? Mass Save Rebates aim to displace carbon emissions. They’re ironically funded by the same companies that sell you carbon fuel. Odd. Regardless, it can be a great fit for many people. But it isn’t for everyone, so tread carefully and ask questions.
In short, if you use high-end, efficient equipment (i.e., expensive) and displace some carbon heating in your home, you can get a rebate from $1,250/ton to $3,000/ton (Note: your home is likely between 2 and 5 tons). Make sense? If not, book a call with us or keep reading…then book a call.
Choosing the “right” path
The two biggest factors influencing which of the Mass Save paths you choose below are how much money you want to spend to decarbonize and whether you want a backup heat source.

What do we recommend?
The specifics of your home will determine which Mass Save Program path makes the most sense. Is there a furnace? Is there reusable ducting? Is there access to all rooms? Is the current heat source in good shape? Is this a 1910 three-story in Dorchester or a 1970s build in Milton?
We find that the partial home rebate is a pretty good option for many homes, but not all homes. That’s why it’s best to have a conversation with a professional before making a decision.
WARNING: Heat Pumps can cost a LOT of money to run if they are incorrectly sized or poorly installed. Use someone you can trust.
Technical solution examples (jargon warning)
People use many terms to describe different HVAC systems. To simplify things, you will likely use an air source heat pump, which is the system the vast majority of people use. Mini-splits are likely the best solution if you do not already have ductwork and don’t mind the aesthetics (i.e., a head unit in each room).
Whole home rebate
Variable-speed central air handler w/ coil
Mini-split system
Add heating elements to both options above for super-cold days
Partial home rebate
Variable speed central air handler with gas furnace and coil
Mini-split system with backup boiler
No rebate
Fixed speed central air handler with gas furnace and coil
Mini-split system (lower efficiency) with backup boiler
These Mass Save rebates could make investing in energy-efficient heating and cooling solutions more affordable.
